Presentations & Workshops
Thank you for your interest in Career Services! Our professional staff is available to make presentations on a variety of career-related topics.
Presentations can vary in length from 10 to 90 minutes, dependent on your needs. Submitting requests at least two weeks in advance is greatly appreciated. Once submitted, a Career Services staff member will contact you to schedule and finalize details.
Available Presentation Topics
Designed for faculty, instructors, or student groups who want to do something but cannot find an hour in their schedule for a longer presentation. Possible topics include: 10 Tips for Preparing for the Career Fair, 10 Reasons to Utilize Career Services Resources, 10 Tips on Resumes, Learn How to Successfully Navigate Handshake or LinkedIn in 10 Minutes, 10 Tips for Successful Interviews, or 10 Tips for the Modern Job/Internship Search.
Timeframe Options: 10 minutes
Students will learn tangible tips and resources for exploring their career possibilities, how specific majors can connect to career opportunities and how to articulate the value of their degree and educational experiences to employers. This session can be tailored towards specific majors, or in exploring majors in general.
Timeframe Options: 30-50 minutes
This session is designed to discuss resume formation, content, context and style, and help students learn about the value of targeted resumes to employers, specific fields/industries and graduate programs. This session can also include information on how to add and talk about academic courses to their resume/CV.
(Option: include cover letter — 50 min).

This session explores the art of creating a cover letter that tells employers why you are the candidate of choice, why you want to work for them and the value you offer. Styles include job/internship applications, prospecting, follow-up and thank-you letters and letters of declination.

What are the steps to a successful modern-day search? This session will help students identify how to organize their search for effective results — networking, the hidden job market, applicable search engines, how to analyze and interpret job descriptions, as well as providing advice on specific industries/fields.

In this session, students will explore the practical and imperative purpose of networking for professional development, and help them identify and build their network through informational interviewing, job shadowing, social media platforms such as LinkedIn, and formal and informal career events.

Gain insight into the powerful career exploration, networking and job search capabilities LinkedIn has to offer, including the easiest way to connect with other Vandal alumni across the world. Then, learn about how Handshake, U of I’s career engagement platform, connects students and alumni with employers and the jobs and internships for which they are actively recruiting Vandals.
Timeframe Options: 30-60 minutes or 10 Tips in 10 Minutes
Students will learn about the “who, what, where and when’s” for job offer negotiations, and resources they can utilize to prepare. This session will also show students how to research specific industries/fields and articulate the value they bring to the position/employer so as to successfully negotiate for a competitive salary and benefits.
Timeframe: 50 minutes
Do I need to go to grad school? When should I go? What degree(s) and experiences will help accomplish my goals? Where in the world can I study? This presentation provides resources for students to start thinking and answering questions about identifying ideal graduate programs, and include tips for basic application requirements and interview preparation.
Timeframe Options: 30-50 minutes
This interactive session will help students learn more about their preferences, values, strengths, skills, and personality, and how these can help them make more informed, and critical decisions about their educational and career interests.
Timeframe Options: 60 minutes (introduction to assessments) or 90-120 minutes (career assessment interpretations)
Practice Interviews
We work with faculty to offer mock interviews to prep students for graduate school or a specific profession that their major leads to. This practical practice sets them up to be a competitive candidate for any program or position. Reach out to careerservices@uncsj.com to chat with a career consultant and learn more.
Stand Out in Your Next Interview: Preparation and Practice
This session will help students identify and practice effective strategies for successful internship or job interviews, included an overview of behavioral-based interviews and adapting to different interview formats and settings.
